Hippocampus c. 1895

by William Dentzel

The hippocampus, or seahorse, was born of Roman mythology. Neptune's chariot was pulled through the ancient seas by several of these magnificent beasts, and according to the myth, the Roman god was occasionally seen riding on one of their backs. Dentzel stopped making these creatures around 1900, and only four are known to have survived. This one endured a fire which charred much of the old paint giving the effect of just having come out of the ocean.
